Ancient Belize

One of the most impressive Maya ceremonial caves ever found. In use 300–600 AD. A subterranean river, ancient rock formations, and a main chamber where history stands completely still.

"Maiden of the Rock." The second tallest Mayan ruin in Belize. El Castillo rises 130 feet above the main plaza with panoramic views across the Cayo District, Guatemala, and the Mopan River.

The most extensive Mayan site in Belize. Over 80 square miles, 30,000 structures, and at its peak a population of 150,000. Situated deep in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve — only rediscovered in 1936.

Two hours from Belize's western border. One of the largest cities of the Classic Maya Period, abandoned over 1,000 years ago. The jungle grew back over everything.
Into the Jungle

Drift downstream in an inflated inner tube, fingers trailing in crisp clear water, as the vine-draped mouth of a mysterious cave opens above you.

An hour down the Southern Highway to Placencia, then by boat through the lagoon and out to sea to the mouth of the Monkey River. Howler monkeys, manatees, crocodiles, extraordinary birds — with a resident licensed guide leading the walk.

400 feet above a valley in the Maya Mountain foothills. Seven lines, eleven decks, the longest zipline in Belize.

One of the best-kept secrets in the district. A hidden waterfall with a clear pool at its base. Your guide handles the bumpy dirt roads — you just enjoy the arrival.

Almost two miles of refreshing river, Class 2 rapids, and total immersion in southern Belize's wild interior.
Into the Blue

UNESCO-listed. Over 100 coral species, 500 species of fish. Eagle rays, sea turtles, exotic fish, dolphins, friendly nurse sharks. Stop at Bread and Butter Caye on the way back.

Fresh bait from the mangroves. Morning fishing along the reef. Lunch at Bread & Butter Caye. Then into the water for world-class snorkeling.

Permit, bonefish, and tarpon in the crystal-clear flats of southern Belize. One of the finest flats fishing destinations in the world.

Morning fishing, then an island BBQ at Bread and Butter Caye with the day's catch and other seafood prepared by your guide. Snorkel after lunch. A full private day on the water, 8 AM to 3 PM.

Paddle the calm waters of the Coral Pointe peninsula at sunrise or sunset. Arranged directly through the property.
Inland Belize

Twenty minutes to Outback Stables. A brief training session, then onto the trail — through a citrus orchard and into the Tropical Rain Forest. Plunge into the cool Sittee River along the way, near the Cockscomb Wildlife Sanctuary.

The world's first jaguar preserve. Spectacular waterfalls, mountain views, and over 290 species of birds. Hikes range from short walks to Ben's Bluff with its panoramic view of the entire basin.

Belize is home to more than 500 identified species of birds. A pre-dawn drive through Sittee River, where keel-billed toucans, fork-tailed flycatchers, blue-crowned motmots, and harpy eagles wait in the lush vegetation.

Twenty-nine acres of tropical savanna and over 150 animals representing 45 species — all native to Belize. Orphaned, rescued, and rehabilitated wildlife in a setting that feels nothing like a zoo.

At the foothills of the Maya Mountains in Toledo. One of the largest black pepper and vanilla farms in the country, set among teak, mahogany, rosewood, and sandalwood. You will never look at your spice rack the same way again.

An hour away. Local art galleries, gift shops, restaurants, and beaches often declared the best on mainland Belize. Placencia's Main Street sidewalk holds the Guinness record as the World's Narrowest Street.

What the Belizeans call it.
The Sittee River is the gateway to one of nature's most breathtaking phenomena. A five-minute boat ride takes you onto the water. The night sky is thick with stars, all the way down to the tree line.
The guide's flashlight cuts across the lagoon. Then he turns it off.
The boat picks up speed. The wake begins to glow. Blue light. The tiny algae, settled in the lagoon during the dry season, get agitated and illuminate. The faster the boat moves, the brighter it burns.
He stops the engine. You stare into the water. Schools of fish dart beneath you, each one trailing blue fire.
It is, by every account of everyone who has ever seen it, absolutely unbelievable.
